The Indian Under 21 women’s hockey team beat England for the third-fourth playoffs in the Volvo International tournament played at Breda, Holland last night. It was an excellent display by both teams but the Indian team held their nerve to finish at the third position.
In the first half both teams played some excellent hockey. The Indian women’s hockey team put up a defense display and did not concede any goals. The Indian team was not able to break the English defense before Punam scored a field goal in the 27th minute to give the lead. The England players tried their best but India led 1-0 at half time.
In the second half India started with more aggression as England was eager to equal the scoring. England earned three back to back penalty corners but all of them was well saved by the Indian goalkeeper. India earned a penalty corner but was well saved by Amy. With just two minutes to go England earned a penalty corner and Hannah leveled the score at 1-1. At the end of the second half both sides were equal at 1-1 and the match went into penalty shootout.
The Indian team scored only one goal and the England team was not able to score any goal as India won the match by 1-0. It was a great performance by the Indian women’s team to finish third in the tournament and show such fighting spirit.
The Indian men’s team did also a great job finishing fourth in the tournament but had some poor performances in the tournament. It is good to see both teams perform well and hope that India does well in upcoming tournaments.
