New Zealand beat India in the first hockey test match by 2-0 at Nelson earlier today.

The New Zealand team played some good and attacking game. The Indians had earlier won the two practice games before this match.

In the first quarter, both teams got off to a quick start. New Zealand’s Nick Haig converted a penalty corner in the 5th minute giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The hosts were on the attack as the Indian team looked on the back foot. The Indian team earned a penalty corner in the 13th minute, but they were not able to convert the chance. At the end of first quarter. New Zealand led 1-0.

In the second quarter, the Kiwis started off where they left in the first quarter. A close shot on goal by New Zealand in the 2nd minute was not legal as it had crossed the back line. India immediately tried to attack, but the New Zealand attacked more. The hosts persistence paid off as Panchia scored an excellent field goal in the 13th minute to give hosts a 2-0 lead. New Zealand tried to widen the gap with a shot in the last minute, but it was off target. At the end of second quarter, New Zealand led 2-0.

In the third quarter, Indian team began with a sense of urgency making an attacking move in the first 30 seconds of the quarter. New Zealand attacked and made two attempts in the 5th and 9th minute. The Indian team attacked, but the New Zealand defense was up to the mark. At the end of third quarter, New Zealand still led 2-0.

In the fourth quarter, India took control occupying the other half of the field for the opening minutes. The Kiwis never allowed the Indian team to score goals. New Zealand attacked, but the Indian defense was on its guard. The New Zealand team made a positive move in the 12th minute, but P Sreejesh made a great stop. The Indian team made last attempts in the last minutes of the game, but New Zealand team did not allow them to score. New Zealand won the match 2-0.

New Zealand lead the series 1-0 with the next match to be played at Nelson tomorrow.
