Chandreyee Hajra, the 15-year old chess prodigy from West Bengal, has put a mark in the chess fraternity of Bengal. Chandreyee, a resident of Rishra in Hoogly district, an hour drive from Kolkata, has achieved a silver medal in the recently held Asian Youth Chess championship in South Korea. More importantly, Chandreyee who is studying in the tenth standard at her school in Rishra, is a student of famous Grand Master Dibyendu Barua. And while speaking after her return from South Korea two days ago, Chandreyee said, “Since the age of my 5 years I started playing chess thanks to my father’s desire and initiative. Later on I joined another famous chess player Niraj Misra. And then from there I was admitted to Dibyendu Barua chess academy. Initially, while practicing at Dibyendu sir’s school for last four years, sometimes I became bewildered to have thought that how much simplicity a chess legend has acquired in his attitude that a beginner like me did not even hesitate to talk to him.”

The interesting part in Chandreyee’s chess career so far is that, she was a regular marshal art player. And she was admitted to a local marshal art school following advice from her Dibyendu sir. Chandreyee said, “Even, on the math day before the start, I do some exercises which I learnt from marshal art. This apart, I have a habit of doing the basic exercises of karate almost every morning.” Chandreyee who has an also a medal in Karate in a state championship, clarified that once playing karate and maintaining its basic exercises till today help her a lot to develop herself in the chess. Chandreyee added, “In Karate one needs extreme level of mind concentration as well as reflex action. And in a similar way in chess, one needs the same mental concentration as well as reflex action to perform. So, it always helps me.”

The chess player also has passion on drawing painting. And she has developed a habit of drawing pictures whenever she gets additional time from her chess. Magnus Carlsen has been the most favorite player of Chandreyee. She stated, “Carlsen is my most favorite player for his variety in the game and brilliant end-game strategy.”
