Five time World Champion and gold medalist from the 2014 Asian Games MC Mary Kom has urged the Indian government to help her in getting a new boxing academy in NCR region which includes Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad. Mary Kom had expressed her wish at an event organised by a private school which was hosted at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Gurgaon a couple of days back. The boxer expressed her happiness about the country’s huge talent pool and potential among the youth boxers who can reach international standards, provided the right training and direction are given to them.
“The performance graphs of Indian players in international circuit have reached new heights in the past seven to eight years with many players managing to win medals at the Olympics, Asian Games, World Boxing Championship and the Commonwealth Games. Hence, more and more youth should be encouraged to join boxing and the sport should be promoted. I have urged the state governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi for the allotment of adequate land to open a boxing academy in any of the cities in NCR. Opening an academy is not as challenging for a sportsperson as the task of operating it in a smooth manner,” Mary Kom said.
The London Olympic Bronze medalist is already running a boxing academy in Imphal with the help of the Manipur state government which has allotted land and funds for the same. At least 40 male and female aspiring boxers are learning the skills of the sport at the academy.
