A new era began on Smackdown as the McMahons took over the show, again. The current general manager is no more in charge on the show. Last night, we witnessed a women’s championship match on the show with a hint of change in the tag team division. Plus, there were two unusual tag team matches to entertain the fans. Here are the results from the episode hosted by the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.
Smackdown kicked off with a backstage vignette where Shane McMahon introduced the ‘former’ general manager of Smackdown, Paige. The entire roster was chanting Thank You, Paige. But she is not going anywhere. It’s only the role that has changed.
We go into the arena to see Becky Lynch making her entrance. She looked fierce who wanted to get her hands on Ronda Rousey. Charlotte Flair came out with the same demand. Smackdown women’s champion Asuka came out demanding that it’s her time. The three broke into an argument as Vince McMahon’s music hit. He advised them to move forward from TLC and asked Asuka about a title defense.
It was sort of an open challenge which Naomi gave an answer to. So the title match was official on Smackdown, right away. Charlotte and Becky were sitting at ringside as the match progressed. Asuka had the Ankle Lock in, at the early part of the match. Naomi goes outside hit a spin kick off the barricade. She also hit the rear-view but Asuka locked in the chokehold to pick up a submission win.
Rusev cut a promo on Shinsuke Nakamura about how he is going to take away the United States Championship. Back in the ring, Jeff Hardy appeared to hear an apology from Samoa Joe. The heel superstar went ahead to blast Jeff Hardy instead insinuating a heated confrontation. Joe went on to attack Hardy but digested a Twist of Fate to end the segment.
The Miz was eager to team up with Shane McMahon on Smackdown. Vince McMahon instead made Mandy Rose her partner in a mixed tag match against R-Truth and Carmella. Carmella started the match hitting a drop-kick on Mandy who tagged Miz into the match. Truth controlled the match after which Carmella hit Mandy with a super-kick. This allowed Miz to hit Truth with a Skull Crushing Finale for the win.
The Usos were on Smackdown talking about how they are running the tag team division. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows came out to confront them setting up a match. Jimmy Uso hit a splash on Anderson and went for the cover but SAnitY came down to disqualify the match. SAnitY and The Bar laid waste to Gallows, Anderson and The Usos to end the segment.
The main event of this week’s Smackdown was AJ Styles and Mustafa Ali teaming up against Daniel Bryan and Andrade “Cien” Almas. Bryan targeted Ali locking in the Half-crab on him. Almas hit Ali with the splash for the pinfall but he kicked out. Ali came back with a spinning DDT. Styles put Almas with a Phenomenal Forearm whereas Ali hit an inverted 450 splash onto Daniel Bryan for the win.
