Sania Mirza has created history in Indian Tennis by becoming the first ever Indian women player to be World number 1 in the Women’s doubles WTA Ranking pairing up with Martina Hingis.
They beat Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurako 6-0, 6-4 to win the Family Circle Cup tournament in Charleston. This is after Sania Mirza had just made it into the Top-3 ranks in the World very recently.
Mirza and Hingis had survived a tough test to reach the final, beating Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 in a rain-affected semi-final on Saturday. But on Sunday, they put up a brilliant show to seal the title with ease. Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurako’s pair had reached semifinals beating M. Erakovic and A Petkovic 6-4, 1-6 and 10-5.
They had beaten Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan to reach the Family Circle Cup tennis tournament’s semi-finals last Friday.
The Number 1-seeded Hingis and Mirza battled Medina Garrigues and Shvedova for an hour and 41 minutes for a 7-5, 4-6, 13-11 victory, fighting off a match point down 10-9 in the match tie-break and needing six match points of their own to edge the Spanish-Kazakhstani defending champions.
Sania Mirza born in Mumbai, on 15 November 1986, stands tall at 5 ft 8 inches and is a graduate from St.Mary’s college in Hyderabad. She became a professional in 2003, plays right-handed.
