Drew McIntyre Discusses His Freedom In The Mid Card Division
After joining the main roster he was given an instant title shot at the Intercontinental championship and he won the title. He was having an excellent time in WWE and he was running and undefeated streak as well. Later WWE understood it was too early for him and they let him go in 2014.
He spent three years outside of WWE to get more maturity and became one of the biggest sensations of professional wrestling before returning to WWE in 2017. This time he had been treated as a more serious deal than his previous run in WWE.
At first he spent sometimes on the NXT before coming to the main roster and he got his first serious main event push in early 2020 as he won the Royal Rumble match and defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36 to win his first WWE Championship. He remained main event star for a complete year but after losing against Bobby Lashley at WrestleMania 37 he could never find his main event status back.
Since WrestleMania 37 he has been playing an upper mid card role. He is mostly focusing on non title matches with mid card wrestlers and in most cases he is winning. So not from any angle is getting buried. The position in WWE he is in right now, he could be picked up onto the main event status anytime.
There is a rumour of him winning the Royal Rumble match and facing the WWE champion at WrestleMania 38. Even though it is all rumours but we will not be surprised if it actually happens.
Drew McIntyre who is a former WWE Intercontinental Champion and a former two times WWE Tag Team Champion recently spoke to Shakiel Mahjouri from CBS Sports where he discussed his freedom in the mid card scene. He said;
“Yeah, for sure. You get to try new things. When you’re the champion, you really want everything to hit. You’re expected to have everything hit. You can throw some things against the wall when you’re not the champion and see what sticks.
“What works and what’s not working, there’s not as much on you when you’re not involved in that title scene. Also for the fans, it gives them a chance to see you in a different light. See you doing something else.
“And eventually, hopefully, they get to the point where they’re like, ‘Why is this guy not in the title picture? This is driving me crazy. I want to see him there again…It’s cool to get away, add some layers to the character.
“Maybe get a new hold as they like to say in the wrestling industry and have the fans start rallying behind you and chase the title. Cause you know, the interest and the money, generally, is in the chase as opposed to holding the title.”
