Another championship match is on the verge of getting confirmed for Wrestlemania 39 on this week’s WWE Smackdown. Two former friends-turned-enemies will go to war for an Intercontinental Championship opportunity in the only confirmed segment of the March 17 episode of the show that takes place at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Last Friday night on WWE Smackdown, Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER was supposed to find out his WrestleMania 39 opponent for his title but that wasn’t the case as the originally scheduled number-one contender’s match came to an end without a proper outcome.

A Fatal-5-Way match featuring Karrion Kross, LA Knight, Xavier Woods, Drew McIntyre, and Sheamus was supposed to determine GUNTHER’s next challenger, last week. However, the closing moments of the match witnessed Sheamus and McIntyre pinning Woods and Knight, respectively, at the same time.

Sheamus nailed a brogue Kick on Woods while McIntyre executed his pendant Claymore to claim the pinfalls. But ultimately, there was no winner since both the superstars got the pin at the same time. The referee didn’t take any decision regarding the winner on the spot.

Later on the show, GUNTHER complained to WWE official Adam Pearce about the situation of getting two challengers instead of one which was unexpected. Pearce found a solution to the problem and he announced that Sheamus and McIntyre will have to fight it out on this week’s Smackdown and whoever wins the match, will fight for the Intercontinental Championship at Wrestlemania 39.
