A total of 15 players in Indian cricket team were in favour of Ravi Shastri being appointed as the Head Coach of Indian cricket team, a report in Deccan Chronicle suggests. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI also didn’t disappoint members of the team and finally gave the job to one of the closest people to Virat Kohli.
It is to be noted that right from Anil Kumble’s resigning as the Head Coach to Shastri being given the job, the members of Indian cricket team have played a vital role as last month it was reported that all the 10 players whom the CAC met and inquired about Kumble, spoke against then coach and as a result, the committee didn’t even meet Kumble after he resigned.
The onus was again on the Indian team to get a new coach for themselves and a total of 15 members batted for Shastri, leaving no room for someone else. (Read Here: 3 Questions Asked By CAC To Every Interviewee)
It is a known fact that Indian skipper Virat Kohli too shares a good rapport with Shastri and in no case, CAC could have gone against the skipper. Last year they did it, and the results were seen as Kumble stepped down from his post of Head Coach of Indian cricket team as soon as his contract ended, despite been given an extension for the tour to Windies.
Kumble was not on the flight to Caribbean nation and even the players came to know about the news of Kumble giving up the job when they landed in the country. (Read Here: New Head Coach Of Team India Announced)
Kumble blamed the untenable relation with Virat Kohli as the reason for his exit whereas skipper played the matter safely and asked to maintain the sanctity of the dressing room.
The matter was done and dusted soon after Kohli’s answer but left few questions for CAC. How could they give a job to someone who is not captain’s favourite? It is the captain who has to be there with the coach and not CAC.
Learning from the mistake, CAC took no chance and walked on the stand of skipper and 15 members of Indian cricket team, thus Shastri was handed the job. Along with him, Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid too joined team India’s dressing room in the capacity of bowling coach and batting consultant (for overseas Test tours) respectively.
