India, having won the toss and elected to bat first, scored at a brisk pace ended the session at 106/1 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

The pitch had no devil, as the new ball hardly swung in the air or seamed off the wicket. Indian openers played aggressively, as Vijay (55*) scored a half-century inside two hours on first day. Dhawan was the only wicket to fall, as he edged Anderson to wicket-keeper Prior. Dhawan just scored 12 runs. Pujara (38*) joined Vijay and put up an unbeaten partnership of 73-run for the second wicket.

Earlier at the toss, India gave Karnataka all-rounder Stuart Binny a Test debut as MS Dhoni took the bold decision to go in first Test with five bowlers. India went in with five bowlers for the first time since Adelaide 2008 in away series.Due to this new five bowler theory Rohit Sharma missed out in first Test.

Indian skipper MS Dhoni justified his decision said: “The pitch would help the faster bowlers, but what we have seen in England is that it is more about the weather than the wicket.”

The toss happened under clear skies, but rain is predicted for the next three days. The Trent Bridge pitch had a look of a sob-continent wicket with dry-looking grass.

England skipper Alaistair Cook said: “It looks like it is swinging after a bit of overnight rain but it looks a very good wicket. The groundsman has done a great job to try and get some pace in the wicket.”

On to the changes now, England brought back Ben Stokes in place of Chris Jordan which can be seen as like to like replacement. Matt Prior will keep the wickets in spite of some reports claiming he was doubtful starter with a tight thigh muscle in nets yesterday.

England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Sam Robson, 3 Gary Ballance, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Joe Root, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Ben Stokes, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 James Anderson

India 1 M Vijay, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Stuart Binny, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Ishant Sharma
