India vs England 2016/17, 3rd ODI, Eden Gardens: Twitter Reacts As India Lose Thriller Despite Kedar Jadhav’s Heroics
Jan 22, 2017 at 9:53 PM
Kedar Jadhav’s fighting knock of 90 went in vain as England defeated India by five runs to win their first match of the tour.
Chasing 322, the hosts once again began poorly as their openers KL Rahul (11) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) returned to the hut with the scorecard reading only 37. Virat Kohli (55) and Yuvraj Singh seemed to have the situation under control before the former edged a Ben Stokes delivery straight to Jos Buttler.
England bowlers compounded further misery on India by dismissing Yuvraj (45) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (25) with the hosts still needing 149 runs in the last 18.2 overs. A century stand between Kedar Jadhav (90) and Hardik Pandya (56) brought India right back into the match before the visitors clawed their way back by dismissing Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin in quick succession. The hosts needed 16 from the final over and Jadhav started in the best possible manner by hitting the first two balls for a six and four respectively. The next two balls were dot balls before Jadhav was dismissed on the penultimate ball. With six needed off the final ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar swung his bat wildly but missed the ball completely as England managed to avoid a whitewash.
Earlier, England’s lower-order batsmen scored some quick runs to help their team score over 300 for the third time in a row. Jason Roy and Sam Billings gave the visitors a solid start by adding 98 runs for the first wicket before the latter was sent back by Ravindra Jadeja. The left-arm spinner struck again to dismiss the dangerous Roy for 65. At 194 for 2 in the 34th over, England were looking well-placed to post a huge total but three wickets from Hardik Pandya in quick succession threatened to derail their innings. Eoin Morgan’s men were reeling at 246 for 6 by the end of 43rd over before Ben Stokes ( 57 from 39) and Chris Woakes (34 from 19) took England to a huge total by adding 73 runs from only 40 balls.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:

The balance that Woakes and Stokes provide will hold England in very good stead in the days ahead.

#INDvENG All said Hardik Pandya needs to work on his ability to play reliable shots under pressure. Youngsters rely too much on blind shots.

Pandya has been lucky with both bat & ball all series. Lottery tickets? Give it a shot, brother! #INDvENG

So, India still getting nothing from the openers. @klrahul11 is a special player, maybe needs to learn how to be judicious from his captain

Ajinkya Rahane has maintained our tradition and culture of opening the innings. 😂
