Having being put in to bat first, Kolata Knight Riders (KKR) scored a decent total of 163/8 against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in their 20 allotted overs, at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
For KKR, Robin Uthappa top scored with 42, while Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan contributed 21 and 20 runs respectively.
For KXIP, Karanveer Singh was the star performer returning with 3 for 40 in his four overs, while Mitchell Johnson and Akshar Patel picked up two wickets each. The eigth wicket to fall was a run-out of Sunil Narine.
Earlier at the toss, amid bright sunshine at Eden Gardens, which allowed a complete 20-over match and a scheduled 4pm start after the match was postponed from Yesterday to today due to heavy rains in Kolkata, George Bailey won the toss and elected to field against Kolkata Knight Riders in Eden Gardens in the first qualifier match. A win here will allow the team to directly play in Sunday’s final.
On to the team news now where Kings XI Punjab went in with an unchanged side that hammered whipping boys Delhi Daredevils in their previous games on last Saturday. Mitchell Johnson was the only established bowler amon a relatively young and little known bowling attack, which comprised of the spinners Akshar Patel, who has been find if the tournament, and Karanveer Singh who too have been impressive in limited oppurtunities so far. Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, made just one change, as leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was brought in to the XI in place of pacer Vinay Kumar.
Kings XI Punjab had finished the IPL league pahse at No.1 spot in the table without much fuss, while Knight Riders sealed second place which guaranteed a home playoff thnaks partly to Yusuf Pathan’s blitz against Sunrisers Hyderabad which helped them jump over Chennai Super Kings on net run-rate.
