Football as a sport has not been very popular barring few states in India. The country has a national team playing the sport for a long time but has not been able to impress the fans in their showings. They play Iran in the World Cup Qualifier on the 8th of September which will a stern test after they have failed to win any of their last 4 games.

Yugoslavia 10-1 India
This game took place in Helsinki in 1952 in the month of July. The coach of the Indian National team then was Abdul Rahim Syed. India lost the game humiliatingly as they let in 10 goals and scored only one in reply. Zebek scored 5 goals for Yugoslavia and Mitic also bagged a hat-trick. This is the worst loss that the Indian national football team has ever faced.
Burma 9-1 India
In the August of 1971, Burma and India met for the Merdeka Cup in Kaula Lampur. Burma ran out clear winners with an embarrassing 9-1 victory over the Indian team. Magan Singh was the only player to score for India as Ye Nyunt scored a hart-tick on the day for Burma. This game was played on the 15th of August, making it all the more humiliating for the country.
Kuwait 9-1 India
More recently, Kuwait and India met for an International friendly at Abu Dhabi in 2010. On the 14th of November, India lost to Kuwait and conceded 9 goals and scored just the one. Though the game was a friendly, it is the third-worst defeat in the history of the nation. Mohammed Rafi was the only Indian on the score sheet while Bader El Mutwa scored thrice for Kuwait.
South Korea 8-0 India
Another disastrous Cup campaign for India in 1976 ended with a loss to South Korea. It was the Merdeka Cup which was held in Kaula Lampur that year. A hat-trick by Cha Bum Keun helped by his teammates put 8 past a helpless Indian team who were not even able to score on the day. This was another forgettable night for the nation’s football supporters.
China 7-1 India
This time it was the Asian Games in 1974 that were held in Tehran. India was playing China a game that saw India concede 7 goals in the game. China completely humiliated the Indian team and made a mockery of their defense. Magan Singh was the only Indian to find the net as China ran away with a marauding victory.
Though most of these games are pretty old, the national team has not improved significantly and is still placed at 155 in the FIFA World Rankings. They play 40th placed Iran in their next World Cup Qualifier. They will have to be at their best if they want to get anything out of the game especially having won only a single game from the first four Qualifiers so far.
