According to the latest reports Arsene Wenger has made Bayer Leverkusen’s defensive midfielder, Lars Bender as his primary target and is ready to pay as much as £22 million to lure the midfielder away to Emirates Stadium.
It has been a long known story that Arsene Wenger is scouting all over Europe for some world class defensive midfielders to shield and add steel to his defence. Wenger is very much interested to but atleast two quality defensive midfielders to overcome his problems with the defence. Arsenal management are also ready to give enough budget to buy his targets.
Wenger is also ready to make the best use of the transfer window to lure the midfielder to Arsenal as there was a rported interest from Barcelona earlier. With Barcelona unable to be active in this summer’s transfer window, Wenger will pay extra sum if needed to break the buy out clause of the midfielder. Barcelona are put under sanctions for their transfer policy towards U-18 players.
The 25-year old midfielder is the twin brother of Borussia Dortmund’s Sven Bender who also plays in defensive midfield. Defensive midfield is one area where the Gunners are going all-out for the services of world class players across Europe. It is also believed that Lars will be available for lesser amount by the end of his current contract but Wenger does not want to risk the midfielder for Barcelona and want to sign him in this summer.
Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann advised Arsenal to move for Bender, saying: “There are players out there, who would instantly make Arsenal a better team. They are supposed to be looking at Ilkay Gundogan at Borussia Dortmund. He’s a very good footballer – but he is a typical Arsenal player.
“He won’t want to do the dirty work. His instinct is to join in further up the pitch, get a few forward passes going and try to weigh in with a few goals. For me, Arsenal would be much better served going for one of the Bender brothers, especially Lars.”
Presently Arsenal have Francis Coquelin in the defensive midfield and he is doing a pretty good job. However, adding Bender will give wenger more options to choose from when one of the players get injured or going through a rough patch.
