According to Evening Standard, Arsenal are convinced that Southampton defender Jose Fonte is set to join Manchester United and have pull out their interest in signing him.
The 32-year old is speculated to leave Southampton in favour of Manchester United as new manager Jose Mourinho is keen to add an experienced central defender to his roster before the end of current transfer window.
But Arsenal have also made contact with the club over a deal as Wenger is keen to add an experienced defender to his squad with both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista suffering long term injuries.
However, Arsenal are not going to step up their interest in the player as the club are convinced he is moving to Old Trafford to join his fellow-Portuguese man Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese international had earlier confirmed his praise for Manchester United and was flattered with the links to Old Trafford.
He said: “If the interest is there, it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United.
“But I have a contract with Southampton, and I’m just focused on my work, to make a great season. I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that it makes me happy to be associated with it. But to be Manchester United’s player is a big difference.”
The deal is expected to happen over the next few days as Fonte is set to become the fifth signing of Jose Mourinho this summer, suggest many reports across England.
