One Michael Phelps fan is so enamored of the record-breaking Olympian that he had Phelps’ death stare at South African rival Chad Le Clos immortalized on his calf.
Phelps was caught on camera glowering out from under his blue and red striped hoodie at Le Clos, who was revving himself up by doing a little dance before taking on the champ in the 200-meter butterfly semi-final in Rio.
Phelps’ intense eyes and moody expression were instant Internet fodder, inspiring an array of funny internet memes, including Phelps as Darth Maul and comparing him to Grumpy Cat, and spawning the hashtag #PhelpsFace.
The tattoo, which is a remarkable likeness, was inked by Livia Tsang of Chronic Ink Tattoos of Toronto, which opened in 2008.
“And then my boss let me tattoo Michael Phelps on him,’,semi-final,”Tsang wrote on Twitter. As for why Fung would want a permanent scowl on his leg, even if it is from the most medaled Olympian, Tsang told “Because he’s first and foremost a big Phelps fan, but also because of [Phelps’] work ethic and perseverance. When we chose the image, we had a bit of a laugh about it, but he told me that he wanted it because it showed his moment of focus before the race.”
The tat drew raves online, but not everyone was impressed. ‘Lmafoo that person might regret that tattoo eventually!’ wrote a commenter on the shop’s Facebook page. But the 200-meter semifinals no laughing matter for Phelps.
