Dilip Vengsarkar, the former selector said that he would’ve picked young pacer, Umran Malik, in India’s squad for the 2022 T20I World Cup, starting next month in Australia.
Umran Malik impressed everyone with his pace during the Indian Premier League 2022 season this year, picking up 22 wickets in 14 matches for SunRisers Hyderabad- SRH. He was rewarded with a national call-up and made his debut against Ireland in June this year.
Dilip Vengsarkar Would Have Picked Umran Malik For His Speed In 2022 T20I World Cup Squad
Dilip Vengsarkar feels that this was the right time to pick the youngster as his sheer pace could’ve made the difference, especially with the tracks in Australia offering pace and bounce.
“There is no out-of-the-box thinking. I would have picked Umran Malik because of his speed. He is a guy who is bowling 150kmph; you’ve got to pick him now, you can’t pick him when he becomes a 130kmph bowler.
“In Dubai, where the wicket was flat and grassless, where there was no bounce, you needed fast bowlers. If you had medium pacers, you would be tonked around. You needed fast bowlers who could beat the batters in pace,” Dilip Vengsarkar said.
Umran Malik turned heads with his sheer pace in the 2022 IPL, regularly going past the 150kph mark. However, he has also gone for 112 runs in the 3 T20Is he has played thus far with several former players stating that the 22-year-old needs to add more variations in his arsenal to become a seasoned wicket-taker.
The express pacer has picked up 2 wickets in 3 T20Is, with a best of 1/42, averaging 56. He played both T20Is against Ireland and one T20I against England.
Dilip Vengsarkar Impressed With Shubman Gill
Dilip Vengsarkar said that he has been also impressed by young batter Shubman Gill, adding that the likes of Mohammad Shami and Shreyas Iyer should’ve also been selected.
“Shreyas Iyer is in good form and he missed out. Mohammed Shami and Shubman Gill should also be on the team. I am impressed with Gill,” he added.
Shubman Gill recently made his County debut for Glamorgan, and also scored a century for them in a game against Sussex. Shubman Gill was adjudged as the Player of the Series in both the West Indies as well as the recently concluded Zimbabwe series.
He amassed 245 runs in 3 ODIs at an average of 122.50 in the Zimbabwe tour and 205 runs in 3 ODIs averaging 102.5 in the West Indies tour, topping the run chart on both occasions.
Having only played 9 ODIs so far in his career for India, Shubman Gill has amassed 499 runs at a stunning average of 71.28. He has also played 11 Tests amassing 579 runs, averaging 30.47. The 22-year-old registered scores of 64, 43, and 98* against West Indies and 82*, 33, and 130 against Zimbabwe.
