A lot of former cricketers have now come out and given statements regarding MS Dhoni’s return to the India National Cricket Team. Dhoni was last seen in the Indian colours in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Unfortunately, India lost the game to New Zealand and were eliminated from the competition. Since then, Dhoni has been away from the Indian team.
His return was much anticipated with the return of IPL 2020 this year as he was back to the field sweating it hard for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, the BCCI had to postpone the tournament indefinitely due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. And, this has again given way to speculations on Dhoni’s future with Team India.
If I was a national selector, MS Dhoni will be in my team: Ashish Nehra
Now, former cricketers have voiced in their opinion regarding his return to the Indian cricket team when the players return to the training camp. The likes of MSK Prasad, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh and Deep Dasgupta are divided over the participation of India’s most successful captain, keeping his and the future of Indian cricket in mind.
MSK Prasad And Ashish Nehra Opine On MS Dhoni’s Future With Team India
Former India wicketkeeper and chairman of selectors MSK Prasad feels that the only way Dhoni can be in contention is if the T20 World Cup goes ahead as planned later this year.
“I don’t know whether T20 World Cup is happening or not. If it is happening and you are just looking at the camp as a pre-cursor to the tournament, then MS should definitely be there. If it’s a case of bilaterals, then you already have KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson,” Prasad told PTI.
Former India left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra, who has been pretty vocal regarding his former captain, has shown confident in Dhoni’s abilities and feels if the wicketkeeper-batsman expresses his desire to play, he should be in the team whatsoever.
“If I was a national selector, MS Dhoni will be in my team but the bigger question is that whether he wants to play or not. It’s what Dhoni wants at the end of the day,” Nehra said.
Former Cricketers Divided On MS Dhoni’s Return To Team India
Recently, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star batsman Suresh Raina said MS Dhoni did not show any signs of ageing and that he was hitting the big sixes at will, as usual during the training camp in Chennai. Laxmipathy Balaji, the bowling coach of Chennai Super Kings, also vouched for MS Dhoni’s return.
On the other hand, former wicketkeeper-batsman, Deep Dasgupta had said that MS Dhoni should have kept playing domestic cricket if he aspired a return to the Indian team. Kris Srikkanth also noted that if the IPL does not take place, Dhoni’s return looks impossible. Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra also had similar views to those of Srikkanth.
