Arsenal players were baffled at Arsene Wenger’s decision to field David Ospina ahead of Petr Cech in Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Olympiakos.
Arsenal lost to the Greek Super League champions Olympiakos 3-2 at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night in what was the Greek side’s first-ever victory on English soil after 12 failed attempts and Ospina was single out for a costly mistake for the second goal.
After a deflected opener for Olympiacos through Felipe Pardo and a Theo Walcott equaliser for the hosts, Ospina failed to deal with a simple corner from Kostas Fortounis and fumbled the ball over the line. Arsenal hit back again through Alexis Sanchez, but Olympiacos sealed the victory when substitute Alfred Finnbogason swept home shortly afterwards.
Arsene Wenger had refused to comment on his decision which proved to be a blunder. He had said: “I honestly don’t want to go into that conversation with you.
“I make the decisions and selections for the team and I’m responsible for it. I know many things that you don’t know and that you ignore. You cannot select a team by using a poll and getting everyone’s opinion before the game.
“I do not have to sit here and give you any explanation to every decision I make. You are capable of judging and I leave you to that. No keeper is mistake-free, it could have happened to Petr Cech as well.”
Petr Cech was bought from Chelsea this summer for a mere 10 million pounds transfer fee. Since the legendary goalkeeper’s arrival at the club, David Ospina has gone down the pecking order.
Wenger generally rotates the two prolific shot stoppers, Ospina being preferred in the cup competitions mostly. But people were shocked at his decision because this was a crucial game for the Gunners and they had to win it.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the decision to leave Petr Cech on the bench baffled pundits and fans, as well as the Arsenal players, were also surprised and shocked by their managers decision, especially as the player himself expressed to the Gunners chief of his desire to play.
Reports from various media outlets also reported yesterday that Arsene Wenger tore into this squad for their horrendous performance on Tuesday night, leaving a certain unrest around the Emirates dressing room.
Arsenal takes on Manchester United in a crucial game week 8 match in the Premier League on Sunday, 4th October. Arsenal are currently placed fifth in the league table.
