According to reports in Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport, a bid of £50 million by Chelsea for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly has failed.
With just four senior defenders at their disposal as Kurt Zouma works towards a return from injury, Chelsea are facing a crisis at the backline and newly-appointed manager Antonio Conte is desperate to add another centre-back to his squad. However, it seems that a club-record deal to eclipse the £50 million paid for Fernando Torres in 2011 will be required to secure the Napoli defender’s signature.
Senegal international Koulibaly is renowned for his ability to play the ball out from the back, something Chelsea lacks within their current squad. Meanwhile, Chelsea are also trying to bring Everton striker Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.
