Sri Lankan team has suffered another blow as the Lankan middle order batsman Lahiru Thirimanne has been ruled out of the ongoing five matches ODI series due to lower back strain. He has been forced to head back home mid-way. Niroshan Dickwella who is the part of Sri Lanka A team which is scheduled to play 3 first class matches and 5 List A games has replaced him.
Dickwella was part of the test team that lost the test series to the England earlier. Though Dickwella played in both practise matches but failed to break into the final squad. In the first practise match, he scored 53 followed 19 in the second practise match. Till now, Dickwella has appeared in 4 test matches and have scored 144 runs at a meagre average f 20.57 with just one half-century alongside his name. In the lone ODI appearance, he scored 4 runs. From numbers, it can be computed that he is just an average player at international level.
Thirimanne is not the first one to leave the tour mid-way due to an injury as earlier Dhamika Prasad and Dushmantha Chameera have already withdrawn from the series due to injuries. It is to be noted that Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal are playing despite suffering from a hamstring injury. Also, Farveez Maharoof is suffering from an injury to his left hand but he too has decided to carry on.
The Sri Lankan team is struggling to find form and is yet to win a single contest. After losing the test series, the visiting team was quite close to the first win in the first One-Day International but a six off the last bowl of the innings from Liam Plunkett kept the Lankan team out of the reach. In the second ODI, the England team crushed the visitors and won the match by 10 wickets. Still, the Lankan team has much to fight for just they have to raise their bar against the home team.
