Today’s match holds importance for both sides as Mumbai Indians face Delhi Daredevils at the Wankade Stadium, Mumbai from 8.00 PM onwards.
Mumbai Indians has been on a roll, winning three matches in a row while Delhi has been inconsistent. Mumbai Indians won their last match against Kings XI Punjab where Delhi lost their last match against Rajasthan Royals. The last time they met in this year’s edition Delhi Daredevils won the match but Mumbai will be looking continue their winning momentum.
PREVIOUS YEAR CLASHES –
The first time they met was on 27th April at Sharjah. It was a low-scoring match as Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat. Their top order failed miserably with Rohit Sharma, Tare, Anderson, Rayadu and Hussey getting out. Pollard and CM Gautam’s partnership helped Mumbai Indians reach a score of 125 for 6 in 20 overs. While chasing, Delhi openers gave a solid start of 34 runs. Murali Vijay scored 40 runs and Kevin Pietersen scored a 26 not-out. Delhi Daredevils won the match by 6 wickets with 7 balls to spare.
After 20 days, they both met again but this in Mumbai. It was a high-scoring match. Delhi won the toss and elected to field. Simmons, Michael Hussey and Rohit Sharma contributed but the rest of batting failed. Mumbai Indians scored 173 all out in 19.3 overs. While chasing, despite a brave effort from KP, Jadhav and Duminy, Delhi fell short of the target by 15 runs.
Key Players –
Lendl Simmons was the best player for Mumbai Indians in the previous match against Kings XI Punjab. He and Parthiv Patel gave Mumbai Indians a brilliant start. Lendl Simmons hit some great strokes and also created pressure on Kings XI Punjab. He scored 71 off 53 balls and was adjudged the man of the match. Against Delhi Daredevils, he needs to continue the same form so that Mumbai Indians can put up a big score on the board.
Lasith Malinga was at his best in the previous match against Kings XI Punjab. He bowled some excellent yorkers at the end and did not allow the batsmen to score runs with freedom. He finished with 2 for 31 in 4 overs. Today against Delhi Daredevils, he needs to come good with ball and put pressure on the top order of Delhi Daredevils batting.
JP Duminy played a good knock against Rajasthan Royals scoring 56 off 39 balls but did not get enough support. He came and hit some wonderful strokes. His role is to play with aggressive intent. Against Mumbai Indians today, he must lead from the front and ensure that he gets enough support from other team members.
Zaheer Khan is the most experienced bowler for Delhi Daredevils and has played 2 games in the season so far. In the previous match against Rajasthan Royals, he did not pick up wickets but only went for 31 runs in 4 overs. In today’s match, against Mumbai Indians his role is to pick early wickets with the new ball and create pressure on Mumbai Indians batting.
