Explosive Duminy’s century helped South Africa to declare their first innings at the end of the 2nd day with a formidable 455 for 9. Sri Lanka started their 1st innings journey at the end of 2nd day. Sri Lanka started their innings patiently. Both the openers in the form of Kaushal Silva and Upul Tharanga were playing at steady manner. At stumps, they managed to get 30 runs on the scoreboard without losing a wicket.

At the beginning of the third day Tharanga was facing Steyn. Steyn tempted him by pitching the ball outside of the off stump but did not get any reply from his bat. In the first over Steyn only gave 3 runs to Tharanga which made an almost violent sound off the bat. Other bowler of the spell philander the good job and gave only 1 run in the next over. Both the bowlers were doing well but the batsmen were playing defensive. They wanted stable so they did not played roughly at the initial level, but Steyn was successful to break their defense and took Silva’s wicket. Steyn bounced the ball and Silva hooked it and took the top edge and sailed down where Philander raced in, dived forward and plucked a lovely, low catch. Silva contributed only 8 runs.

Kumar Sangakkara walks out, cool as an ice-box. Steyn welcomed him by a short ball but Sangakkara played it tactically by placing it down to short leg. At that time Tharanga was charging up to boost the team score.at the end of the 18th over Tharanga was at 35 and Sri Lanka was at 45 for 1 wicket. O the other hand Sangakkara did not stand quietly, he also started charging Steyn by hitting two consecutive four in the 19th over. Duminy took the Steyn’s place to knock down the 2nd wicket. Tharanga and Sangakkara carrying on with their momentum in scoring for the team. Morkel joined the show and kept the Sri Lankan team under pressure. Replacing Duminy Imran Tahir joined the bowling crew. Sangakkara and Tharanga was moving the scoreboard. Rain was the first villain who not only interrupted the game, broke the concentration of Sangakkara too. After the rain when game started Morkel took Sangakkara’s wicket. Sangakkara scored 24 runs. Mahela Jayawardane took his place but did not performed well. Steyn bowled almost a yorker and the Jayawardane was a little late in getting his bat down and he was out LBW. Two big guns are back in the shed.t was the last ball before lunch.

Imran Tahir did the first ball of second session. Steyn and Tahir was working out desperately to get Tharanga’s wicket but Tharanga was creating pressure on the bowlers. Thirimanne was holding the other side of the crease. Duminy came and clicked. He took deadly Tharanga’s (83 runs off 155 balls) wicket who was moving towards his century. Angelo Mathews, in some impossibly good form, has Sri Lanka’s innings on his shoulders again. The scoreboard was moving slow. Mathews and Thirimanne was looking for a good partnership. Mathew was coming out of the shell. Elgar joined the proteas bowling battalion to break this partnership. At the tea Sri Lanka were 182 runs for 4 wickets.

The players walk out with clear, blue skies above them. Vernon Philander to kick things off in the final session. Thirimanne was playing well but Steyn got him at 72nd over when he was at 38 runs.  Chandimal came out from the dugout to fill the Thirimanne’s place. Chandimal was looking aggressive from the beginning. At 74th over Steyn got him delivering a short ball. Chandimal contributed 6 runs with some unnecessary shots. Perera came out but did not get the chance to stand on the pitch as Steyn was releasing some classy deliveries. Steyn took his wicket at 76th over.

Perera scored nothing but duck. Mathews was still there holding one side. Mathews-Herath partnership was going well where Mathews started playing aggressively. At the end of the 91st over Sri Lanka scored 268 runs for 7 wickets. At the last ball of 95th over Tahir got Mathews who was also heading for the milestone named century. Mathews went for a slog sweep and the ball sneaked under his bat to clatter into his stumps. Lakmal came out at Mathew’s place. He contributed only 6 runs and Morkel got him at the last ball of the 3rd day.Sri Lanka ended scored 283 runs for 9 wickets after the third day.
