Stats: Lowest Test totals against India

On an allegedly “tempered” pitch, Indian spinners proved too strong for South Africa, as the visitors were bowled out for one of the lowest totals by a Test playing nation against India at Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium Jamtha, Nagpur on the second day of the third Test of the four-match Gandhi-Mandela series.

After India’s paltry, but hard fought 215 South Africa batsmen were clueless to Indian spinners who were getting enormous assistance from the pitch.

South African spinner Simon Harmer has taken 4 wickets in the first innings of the match. Harmer’s spin bowling was only an indication what Indian spin trio- Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra were going to do with Proteas.

The trio had tormented South Africa for the entire series. South Africa came to bat on the first day evening session for just nine overs. But, Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja started to clean up the South Africa innings from the very first over of the day. Ashwin, on first day evening, sent back Stiaan van Zyl while Ravindra Jadeja bowled night-watchman Imran Tahir. South Africa ended the day 11 for 2.

But, the real destruction started on the second morning. South Africa suffered a big collapse as their 5 wickets tumbled for just 12 runs. Protea spinner Simon Harmer has already alleged ‘I don’t think the wickets are prepared to last five full days’. He is right as R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared 9 wickets between them in the morning season to bundle out South Africa for 79 and give India a 136 run first innings lead.

Harmer’s statement also justified by former English cricketer Michael Vaughan and former Australian opener Matthew Hayden. Vaughan said, “Nagpur is nothing short of diabolical for Test Cricket” while Mayden said, “baffles me why our great game needs to tamper with conditions in favour for results. Amazing quality teams”.

Meanwhile, South Africa has the record of four lowest totals among the top five lowest totals in the history of Test cricket. The record of lowest total 26 in the history of Test cricket is held by New Zealand.

Sout Africa lost their last 8 wickets in 67 runs. The pitch has already drawn criticism from all around the world as it is “tempered” for a favourable result. However, South Africa’s 79 is their lowest against India in India. This is the second time South Africa were bowled out against India for less than 100 runs. In 2006, India bowled out South Africa for 84 at Johannesburg. It is the fourth lowest total against India by a Test playing nation.

This is the seventh time India bowled out their opponent team since they started playing Test cricket in 1932.
