There is no substitute for two things in this world – Experience and Talent and India’s Suresh Raina is just proving his talent and showing a lot of his experience with a remarkable comeback this 2014 ICC World Twenty20 for Indian team. Having played around 195 T20 games, Suresh Raina is one the most experienced and talented players in T20 Cricket in the current roster
India played the Asia Cup with a talented though fairly inexperienced middle order and that cost them a good chunk of runs in important matches eventually resulting in an early exit from the tournament. The difference in that line-up and this current solid looking line-up is one Suresh Raina.
The Chennai Super Kings star has fought through hard times and has earned his way back into the starting line-up proving his inclusion to be a perfect call by the selectors. He is repaying the faith shown in him by his Captain, selectors and his fans.
Raina along with Virat Kohli guided the Indian team through a relatively easy chase but as they say, it’s never as easy as they make it look. A couple of wickets in that middle order could exposed the lower middle order with Yuvraj yet to find his touch and captain Dhoni returning from injury yet to get into the groove.
The fact that Suresh Raina chipped in with a match winning innings, took 3 catches and gave Dhoni an added spin bowling option shows how Suresh Raina isn’t just important for the Indian team in terms of his batting but covers every facet of game with equal flair.
His magnificent spell against the English side in the warm-up games as yet another display of his smartness as a bowler. Though he isn’t a huge spinner of the bowl, his outsmarts the batsman with his variation and his batsman-like instincts.
With games in T20 decided by 1-2 runs in the shortest format of the game, every run saved is equal to a run scored hence the fielding aspect of his game is multiplied furthermore in this version of the game. And not many in today’s game can stake a claim to be a better fielder than Raina.
Having fallen prey to the short-ball one-to-many times prior to his exclusion from the side, it’s clearly visible that Raina has worked hard on the short pitch deliveries with his pull shots now intending to either clear the field or are kept shrewdly down eliminating the half-hearted mistakes he made earlier.
Add to this, the fact that he has scored over 400 runs in every edition of the 6 Indian Premier League’s that have taken place shows how consistent he has been in T20 cricket and consistency is what India needs at present.
Suresh Raina’s return to the Indian side with such courage and strength is huge plus for the Indian side and if India is to win this T20 World Cup, Suresh Raina will be a pivotal cog in M.S Dhoni’s armory.
