Well, the moment former Indian captain Rahul Dravid, was appointed the coach of India ‘A’ team (Dravid also happened to be the coach of banned IPL team Rajasthan Royals) most of the fans of the game were expecting his reaction on the development in the notorious spot fixing case highlighted earlier.
Dravid however, chose to distance himself from the verdict pronounced by the Supreme Court-appointed committee. The Rajasthan Royals’ owners have been banned for two years from IPL due to corrupt betting practices.
Dravid was associated with the Royals side as a captain previously and thereafter also served as coach. He has denied any knowledge of any wrongdoing under his watch and has regretted not knowing it earlier.
Dravid, while holding his very first press conference after resuming the charge of the coach of India A team, said “I wish I had known three players (S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila) were doing something suspicious. I would have dealt with it. I had no clue about what was going on. I spoke to Mudgal Commission about this.”
He further added, “I don’t want to defend myself and it’s up to people to decide whether it’s a blot. People need to decide whether action of shareholders should be linked to coaches and mentors. It’s disappointing but I don’t want to make judgments on people. Top coaches have stuff to do and its always unfortunate that people at the bottom of the pyramid suffer the most.”
Dravid clearly felt that the judges who gave the verdict would have done so after a lot of thought. He also felt that despite deterrents such as these, the clean-up operation would not be complete overnight.
Expressing his opinion, he said “It’s not for me to decide whether it was harsh. Judges would have put a lot of thought into it. They have a lot more understanding than I do. I have to respect the decision that they have taken, but it’s tough on the league.”
He concluded “It is disappointing that the action of one or two people can affect a lot others. Despite strict punishments, there still are people who want to bring the game into disrepute. So we need to stay vigilant.”
Despite the fact that Rahul Dravid has been associated with Rajasthan Royals for a long duration of time, his integrity, commitment, devotion and honesty are beyond any doubt.
