Real Madrid goalkeeper and Costa Rican international Keylor Navas apparently ‘cried’ when his move to Manchester United fell through on the transfer deadline day.
La Liga giants Real Madrid CF were desperate to lure the services of Manchester United’s star custodian David De Gea. After season long interest, they were on the verge of signing the Spain number one on the transfer deadline day. They were even ready to pay United 29 million pounds and give Keylor Navas in exchange.
But due to some controversial reasons the entire swap deal fell through and David De Gea remained at Manchester United keeping Keylor Navas tied to Real Madrid.
According to media reports, The Costa Rican international goalkeeper was quoted: “[deadline day] Was one of the worst days of my football career.
“I cried when the transfer window was closed, near my wife. I’m human and everything exploded. I was waiting in the airport even without suitcases. I was not on the plane, but I was near”.
Keylor Navas clearly mentioned that he was loving it at Madrid and never wanted to leave the club, but he was deeply saddened after he realised that the club actually wanted to swap him for another custodian.
Navas added: “It was as a complicated situation. I wanted to play and to watch how others [De Gea] play above me is difficult to interpret. At 19:00 CET my agent says me ‘you have to take a plane’ and I was waiting in a room.
“The contract arrived too late. My agent reviewed it and was correct. I didn’t want to go. I did the medicals in Valdebebas after that and I did not return to the airport.
“There was no time. Then I went home. It was complicated. I arrived at the home and I started to cry.”
Keylor Navas had joined Real Madrid in 2014/15 season from fellow La Liga side Levante. The previous season was a dream year for the Costa Rican international who was called by many as on of the best in the league that season.
Real thus got him as a backup keeper of Iker Casillas. Keylor Navas was exceptional for Costa Rica in the world cup and he caught several eyeballs. Unfortunately, Carlo Ancelotti never used him properly as Casillas was always on top in the pecking order.
This season, the club practically forced Iker Casillas to leave the club as they were in pursuit of David De Gea. Since Casillas’ departure Navas has performed exceptionally well for Real Madrid.
In the league, this season Navas has successfully kept 5 clean sheets for the club and is in astonishing form.
It will be interesting to see if Real Madrid will still concentrate on some other goalkeeper irrespective of stellar performances from Keylor Navas.
Just for the record, David De Gea has already signed four-contract extension with Manchester United which means that if Real Madrid wants to get him they will have to pay huge sum of money to Manchester United in the next season.
