Liverpool and other top clubs in Europe are interested in signing Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto, according to his agent. The 25-year-old contract expires at the end of the season, and has no plans to sign a new contract with Fiorentina.
Neto was widely tipped to join Serie A giants Juventus in the summer, but it now seems the deal is yet to be completed. His agent, Stefano Castagna, has claimed several top clubs in England, Spain and Germany are interested in him.
“The only thing that is official is that Neto will not be staying in Florence,” Castagna told Gazzetta TV. “Since Feb. 1, when it became possible to talk to other clubs, we’ve been evaluating offers that are interesting for the lad, in England, Germany and Spain in addition to Italy.
“One of those in England is Liverpool, and then there is a top Spanish club interested in him. Right now, the lad has to make a well pondered decision for his career.
“He’s young and he’s grown a great deal, but even when he was 18 he was one of the best in Brazil.”
Liverpool will be looking to sign a quality back-up for Simon Mignolet, and Brad Jones is expected to leave in the summer. Neto featured for Brazil at the London 2012 Olympics, and was recently warned by national coach Dunga against joining a club as a back-up.
“A young goalkeeper’s going to challenge Buffon — it doesn’t seem like a good idea to me,” Dunga said. “I can’t imagine seeing Buffon on the bench and Neto in his place. Buffon’s still hungry. A young, talented player needs to be playing, not waiting.”
