Player ratings of Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Southampton

West London outfit Chelsea made the trip to the St. Marys’ on Saturday, as they looked to continue winning games. It was surely not going to be an easy game for Guus Hiddink’s side and the Blues would have a tough task at hand to come away with all three points from this fixture. The hosts started the game on a more positive note, as they took the lead in the 42nd minute

of the match when Shane Long took advantage of a defensive lapse. The Saints went into the break leading by a single goal and were looking to secure all three points. However, things did not go
their way, as the visitors fought hard and eventually equalized through a Cesc Fabregas goal in the 75th minute.

Further, Branislav Ivanovic scored at the very end to give his side a narrow win and complete a superb comeback against Ronald Koeman’s men. A close game and a superb finish to the match and the
Dutch manager looked happy with the way his side recovered to beat their opponents on the night.

Here are the player ratings of the game:

Southampton:

Fraser Forster: 2.5/5
At fault for the first Chelsea goal, as he did not stop the shot by Fabregas. Made some decent saves apart from that in the game, but could do nothing about the second goal.

Ryan Bertrand: 2.5/5
Looked good defensively for most of the game, yet was poor towards the end.

Matt Targett: 2.5/5
Though he was not really effective creating chances for his side, he was really good at the back and helped keep Willian quiet.

José Fonte: 3/5
Did his job well at the back but could have done much better against the aerial balls.

Cédric Soares: 3/5
Made some really good runs covering a lot of distance on the flanks and put in a good shift.

Virgil van Dijk: 3.5/5
Looked good at both ends. Played his part by keeping Costa quiet in the game and creating chances for his side.

Steven Davis: 3/5
Responsible for breaking down the Chelsea attacks for quite some time, though he switched off towards the end of the match.

Oriol Romeu: 3/5
Looked calm in possession and played some smart balls right through and showed some movement in the final third.

Jordy Clasie: 3/5
Did a good job in midfield and helped his side keep a hold on the game, though they could not get anything out of it eventually.

Charlie Austin: 3/5
Found some good space and took some quick shots to trouble the opposition defence.

Shane Long: 3.5/5
Missed a really good chance to give his side the lead, as his header went over the cross-bar. Scored the opening goal of the game with a superb finish, after an error
by the away side at the back.

Substitutes:

Graziano Pelle: 2.5/5
Came on for long, but could not make the same impact on the game.

Sadio Mane: 2.5/5
Created some good chances for his side though it led to nothing at the end.

Chelsea:

Thibaut Courtois: 3/5
Tried his best to keep Long’s effort out of goal, though the finish was good enough to beat him. However, was really good at goal apart from that.

Branislav Ivanovic: 3.5/5
Scored the winner for his side in the 89th minute with a good header apart from doing his defensive duties.

Baba Rahman: 2/5
Made a blunder to let Shane Long in with the chance to score the opener. Not the best night for him.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 3/5
Did his job well at the back and kept the opposition attack under check.

Gary Cahill: 3/5
Did his job well at the back and was solid in the game.

Pedro: N/A
Had to be taken off with an injury early on and could not make an impact.

John Obi Mikel: 2.5/5
Could have scored a goal from a header for his side, but wasted that golden chance.

Eden Hazard: 3/5
As the game went on, the Belgian did his part in the match and looked better.

Willian: 3/5
Nearly scored a goal himself, though the finish lacked and set up the winner with a superb corner kick.

Cesc Fabregas: 3.5/5
Scored the first goal for his side, with a shot that looked like a cross but beat everyone and was decent on the night.

Diego Costa: 2.5/5
Put in a great shift in the game to help his side secure all three points, as he was involved in most of the attacks.

Substitutes:

Oscar: 2.5/5
Looked good pushing forward at times after coming on for Pedro.

Kenedy: 3/5
Brought on as a left-back as he replaced Baba Rahman in the game and played his part well.
