Even at the age of 42, Leander Paes looks still hungry for the trophies. And looking forward to the near future this golden boy of Indian tennis looks determined to have another trophy in Rio Olympics in his kitty. Paes who was in Kolkata after a span of 14 years to participate in a mixed doubles friendly match pairing with legendary Martina Navratilova and play against the pair of Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi, said he became extremely nostalgic after arriving in Kolkata.

Paes landed in the city with Bhupathi on Wednesday morning. Paes, speaking to the media after the friendly tie at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, said, “I still have desire to earn medal in the Rio Olympics, surely in the doubles and mixed doubles event. But it has not been decided with whom I will be paring in the Olympics.”

And the 42-year youngster who had won the last Wimbledon in mixed the doubles events, added saying, “Whenever I come to Kolkata, I become nostalgic as I remember Mohun Bagan ground where I used to go with my famous father Vaes Paes in my childhood. I remember South Club, the cradle of my tennis where I started learning tennis from Akhtar uncle (Akhtar Ali). The city always haunts me and makes me nostalgic.” The ace tennis player also added saying, “When I joined the mainstream of the game I never dreamed of being number one in the World in future. But this was my dream I used to nurture in my mind. Even, when in 1999, paring with Mahesh I started participating in the top international tournaments it was beyond my imagination that I would reach the number one spot in the World doubles ranking. But both Mahesh and I had the zeal and desire to reach the spot.’’ Leander also informed that he would start training for the Rio.
