ICC World Cup 2019 Selection: Two Slots, Many Certainties For Indian National Cricket Team
For obvious reasons, it would be intriguing to know the selections for ICC World Cup 2019 with a lot of players available in the ranks. The Indian National Cricket Team got three concerns to pick their world cup squad. One is wicketkeeper slot followed by the number 4 batsman and the fourth bowling option for the team.
There is a stiff competition between Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik for the second wicketkeeper option. However, selectors might also leave both of them, as KL Rahul is in the side.
If they look at specialist number 4 batsman, then Ambati Rayudu will make a cut into the side without any further doubts. If they would like to embed a batsman, who can also bowl a few overs, then the only candidate remaining in the ranks is Vijay Shankar.
Rishabh Pant or Dines Karthik for backup wicket-keeper role:
In another set of choices, they might even ask Rishabh Pant to play as a specialist batsman in the side thus letting a fourth seamer in the side. If the team goes with Rayudu and Vijay Shankar both in the side then they need to stick with two genuine spinners in the form of Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.
“The second keeper only comes into play if MS Dhoni is injured. Rishabh is a phenomenal talent but he has not done anything exceptional in ODIs. Can he hit consistently in 50 overs is the question. But he is in mix,” a former India player, privy to selection patterns, told PTI.
Jadeja or fourth seamer?
In the meantime, Ravindra Jadeja will press his case further, as the conditions in England might push the selectors to go for Jadeja. He not only offers left-arm spin but also gives depth to the batting.
“As of now the team is looking at Vijay Shankar and Hardik Pandya as the combined fourth seamer. Ravindra Jadeja with his all round skills and big hitting prowess is a necessity. Plus in dry conditions, he will be a restrictive option,” the source said.
In between, there are quite a few choices for the fourth seamer as well. The likes of Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma press their case for the tournament because of their experience in the England conditions. On the other hand, youngsters like Khaleel Ahmed, Navdeep Saini and Deepak Chahar might also get the nod.
However, there are quite a few players in the ranks for the Indian National Cricket Team selectors to pick their final 15-member squad. All those doubts will be cleared on April 15th when MSK Prasad-panel announces the squad.
