A harmless attempt to take a quick single resulted in a massive collision between the wicketkeeper and the batsman running towards the danger end. As the bowler runs in to bowl, the batsman on strike jabs the ball down to the covers and calls for a quick run, and as both men collide, the keeper feels the force of the batsman’s momentum and the batsman runs into the keeper and loses his helmet. Both men hurt themselves in what was a pretty comical moment if you are a neutral fan.
The New Zealand batsman completely missing the delivery and the ball eluding the grill of the helmet and striking him on the nose was another potentially critical accident, and could have caused a serious injury. Sometimes umpires end up on the wrong end of these accidents as the umpire at square leg hurt his wrist in trying to protect himself from the shot. Even the reliable technique of Ricky Ponting had no answer when Steve Harmison managed to take him by utter surprise with that bouncer.
The two pakistani players colliding in an attempt to catch the ball was a classic case of both men looking at the ball and a lack of communication on their behalf. The last segments was classic Andrew Symonds. As a man ran onto the pitch, Symmo shoulder tackled him into the ground, and saved the security a bit of running!
“Ouch cricket can bite” indeed!
