Mumbai Indians To Miss Jasprit Bumrah’s Services In IPL 2019
Mumbai Indians (MI) fared poorly in the last season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Rohit Sharma-led side entered the competition as the defending champions and the most successful team in the history of the domestic professional Twenty20 league.
Not surprisingly, the three-time IPL champions Indians were one of the pre-tournament favourites to lift the coveted title. However, as the tournament progressed, it kept on getting clear they would fail to defend their title, this time around.
Mumbai revived their campaign towards the end but eventually crashed out at the league stage. They finished the season at the fifth position with just six wins in 14 games. The Mumbai-based outfit will be desperate to bounce back strongly next season. However, their hopes could be dashed by the absence of their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.
India skipper Virat Kohli had recently expressed his desire to have the key pacers rested in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 season ahead of the World Cup in England. And it seems like the BCCI is all set to accept his proposal and will speak to the franchises. With Bumrah being one of the most important members of the team, the focus is entirely on him, given his recent workload.
A BCCI official recently told The Times of India that the board would need to prepare ample data regarding the pacer’s workload and then have a word with Mumbai Indians to ensure that the 25-year-old is appropriately used in the IPL and remains fit and fresh for the World Cup.
“For someone of Virat’s stature, he can take a call himself and discuss with his franchise about his workload. However, for Bumrah, the Indian team’s support staff will need to prepare all the relevant data so that we can have a discussion with MI if the situation arises,” a BCCI official told PTI.
“Obviously, if he is fit, he will play all important matches for MI but in between, with such a hectic travel schedule during IPL, it will be great if he is rested keeping the World Cup in mind,” the official further added.
The World Cup will start on May 30 while the IPL is likely to end in mid-May.
