It is a well established fact that the performance of Virat Kohli always proves crucial from Team India’s point of view. Recently, when he remained out of form, the whole world looked concerned. And why not, this stylish, aggressive but mature batsman possesses all the necessary ingredients to become a force to reckon with in international cricket. I just intend to mention his splendid batting average. Despite his recent tenure of being out of form, he proudly carries an excellent ODI batting average of 51.57, with 20 centuries and 31 half centuries.

The following awards speak volumes about the talent he possesses:

2014 ICC World Twenty20 Player of the Tournament

• ICC ODI Player of the Year 2012

• People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Sportsperson of the Year 2012

Arjuna Award 2013

Thus, it is not surprising when former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly appreciated Kohli’s contribution and said that a lot depends on the performance of Virat Kohli during the next World Cup. Ganguly has also imposed his faith on the other talented batsmen, particularly MS Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina. Ganguly, placing his complete faith over Virat, said, “Virat Kohli batting will be the key to India’s success in the World Cup. Although he has struggled recently, but the century against West Indies yesterday was a good sign.”

Clarifying further, he said “Having said that, there are many x-factors like Shikhar Dhwan, Suresh Raina, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who can win the World Cup in their own right.”

Emphasizing the importance of Virat Kohli, he added, “You see, when he (Kohli) first came into the side you had Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh. Now the roles have changed. Now he is the top batsman in the side and he has soaked in the pressure of performance pretty well. So in my opinion, Kohli’s performance will decide India’s success in Australia.”

Surely, this heartthrob of millions of the cricket crazy fans of this country has got a distinct role to play in the upcoming World Cup. He can surely be an inspiration for the generations to come.
