EPL Team of the Week: Match Day 15

The start of December marks a very important month of football in England with a number of matches being played over the festive season. This run of games can make or break a season for a club and for a player. The start to this fixture list was this weekend’s Barclays Premier League that saw some astonishing results and some mind-blowing performances.

Big clubs like Chelsea, City and Liverpool lost while United and Tottenham were held for a draw. Leicester City continued their winning momentum and the Gunners also got all three points from this week. These results have only made the race to the top all the more interesting with no team looking strong enough to win it comfortably.

Here is the team of the week for Match Day 15 of the English Premier League.

Goal Keeper:

David de Gea (Manchester United):

The Spanish International was in top form on Saturday against the Hammers as he kept his team in the hunt for most of the game and helped them win a point. His point blank saves allowed him to keep a clean sheet and find a place in the team of the week this week.

Defense:

Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City):

Stoke City are yet to concede a goal since Ryan Shawcross has returned from injury and this tells a lot about the players discipline at the back. Shawcross was exceptional against he Citizens as he constantly put pressure on the home team and got a 2-0 victory at home.

Winston Reid (West Ham United):

The West Ham defender was solid as a wall at the back as he dominated his box with great command. His performance was credited with a clean sheet and a point from Old Trafford as the captain put in a performance than can lift the whole team for the upcoming games.

Steve Cook (AFC Bournemouth):

The Cherries stunned the defending Champions at home with a 1-0 victory this weekend. Cook was instrumental in this achievement as he put in a number of blocks and also produced an incredible ball for his side’s winner.

Mid-field:

Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal):

It was a welcome site for Arsene Wenger to see his star player Aaron Ramsey, net a goal in this weekend’s 3-1 victory against Sunderland. Ramsey who returned to his favored mid-field position was superb in possession and was one of the brightest stars for Arsenal in their victory.

N’Golo Kante (Leicester City):

Defending and blocking everything that came his way, Kante was exceptional with his approach play from the back in Leicester’s 3-0 victory against Swansea. The best part of Kante’s play was his directness in attack that allowed his team to expose the Welsh outfit at the back.

Georginio Wijnaldum (Newcastle United):

Newcastle United stunned Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool with a 2-0 victory this weekend. Wijnaldum was the scorer of both the goals for the home team as he put in an energetic performance in the mid-field that helped his team outplay the Reds in the mid-field helping them secure all three points.

Marko Arnautovic (Stoke City):

Playing on the wing, Arnautovic absolutely destroyed the Manchester City side that were just not able to cope with his physical presence on the flank. He picked up a brace and came close to a hat-trick when he hit the pole with a powerful shot.

Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City):

Continuing his impressive performance, Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick against Swansea city in their 3-0 victory this weekend. His pace and directness were too much to handle for the Swans as they failed to even test the visiting Leicester side.

Attack:

Odion Ighalo (Watford):

Watford should be thankful for the performances put in by their star striker Odion Ighalo. Ighalo was bought down for the first goal before he capped off a brilliant run by scoring and giving Watford a 2-0 victory against Norwich City this weekend.

Romelu Lukaku (Everton):

The big Belgian striker took his tally of goals for the season to 11 with a well taken late goal to give his side a point against Crystal Palace. He was a continuous threat for Palace as he hit the post and the bar and was unlucky not to end on the winning side.
