Well, let’s admit it, Manchester United absolutely burnt their transfer kitty in the summer to pursue world class attacking players bringing in the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera and Radamel Falcao in their squad. However, Louis Van Gaal failed to address his defensive problems and with each passing game, it has become evident that United need to plug in their defensive worries in the upcoming winter transfer window.

The Red Devils had to deal with Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic all leaving the club in the summer and Van Gaal has had to deal with injuries to Johnny Evans and Phil Jones. Thus youngsters Taylor Blackett and Paddy McNair have been called upon to the senior squad but Van Gaal would be sweating over his players’ lack of experience. Moreover Chris Smalling’s stupidity also forced Daley Blind and Micheal Carrick share the roles in the heart of the defense.

It is now believed that United are lining up a €42m move for Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte. The Frenchman has been the key figure for the Basque club over the past season and helped the Lions qualify for the Champions League this season. The Frenchman also had signed a contract extension with Bilbao in the summer but it is believed that Arsenal and United are lining up a move for him in the winter transfer market.

The Guardian had reported earlier that the 20 year old who made 35 appearances in the 2013-14 season is one of the most sought after defenders in Europe and with both the Premier League giants in dire need of central defenders, Laporte would be enticed to make a move to the Premier league in January. Bilbao though are a tough club to deal with. However it is understandable, they have a Basque only policy meaning they sell their players at an inflated price. So will we see another United vs Arsenal battle? This time though in the transfer market? Who will land the player? Only time shall provide us an apt answer.
