Tamil Nadu beat Maharashtra in the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy 2014/15 season at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata by the virtue of first innings lead. It was dead pitch as both of teams scored big runs in their first innings.
Tamil Nadu won the toss and elected to bat. Tamil Nadu lost 3 wickets for 90 runs but after that Vijay Shankar and Dinesh made sure that Tamil Nadu did not lose too many wickets. Vijay Shankar scored 91 and Dinesh Karthik scored 113. After that, R Prassana, B Indrajith and Rangarjan scored some crucial runs to ensure that Tamil Nadu reach a huge score 549.
In reply, Maharastra began well. They lost the first wicket early but after that Gugale and Khuarna stitched a 270 runs partnership between two of them. Gugale scored 154 while Khuarana scored 125. Then wickets fell at regular intervals. The next top scorer for Maharashtra was Bawne, who scored 57 runs. Maharashtra got all out for 454. With this, Tamil Nadu secured a first innings lead and a place in the finals of the Ranji Trophy finals at Mumbai.
Tamil Nadu has played some excellent cricket in this tournament. As compared to this, the second semi-final between Karnataka and Mumbai ended in three and half days. The pitch on the first day helped the fast bowlers. As the time went by, the batsmen enjoyed and scored a lot of runs. Despite having three days to chase a huge target, Mumbai failed to get past the total and lost the match.
The semi final between Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu was a dull affair as the pitch did help the bowlers in the first session and after that it became a batting paradise.
Tamil Nadu will meet Karnataka in the finals and rematch of the first match of this season.
