Arsenal are really bemused by ongoing rumours that claim Mesut Ozil wants to leave the club this summer as Spanish giants Barcelona have shown interest to sign the German playmaker.
The La Liga champions quite expectedly rate Ozil highly, and their interest dates back as long as 2010 when he could have joined Barcelona instead of Real Madrid, but Pep Guardiola then thought that his arrival could block Thiago Alcantara’s progression to the first team.
Reports in Spanish media, particularly from Marca, claimed on Saturday that the German World Cup winner had apparently rejected an offer to renew his contract and that Barcelona have already started proceedings to snatch away the 27-year-old midfield star from Arsenal.
However, an Arsenal insider later revealed that, so far, there have been no detailed talks between Ozil and the Gunners hierarchy about a new deal to extend his contract which still has two and half years to run.
Arsenal are desperate to keep Ozil at the Emirates as after enduring two difficult seasons following his £42million switch from Real Madrid in 2013, Ozil has begun to flourish and prove his worth.
Arsenal are also believed to be confident enough for a new agreement. Ozil has been the fundamental part in Arsenal’s push for the Premier League title this term, and ahead of last week’s clash with Bournemouth, he even revealed how settled he was in London.
In fact, Ozil, who netted the opening goal in the 2-0 victory, made it clear that he is much happier in England than he ever was in Spain.
“My contract runs until 2018, that is for another two and a half years,” Ozil said in an interview with Kicker in December.
“There is no need to hurry. There are no talks at the moment but I can only say that I am very happy in London and that my decision to come here from Real Madrid was the right one.
“There is not a single day, apart from when I was injured, that I have not felt great at Arsenal.”
The report from Spanish news outlet Marca also suggested yesterday that the star midfielder doesn’t think Arsenal becoming a team that can realistically win the Champions League, a promise which was made to him when he arrived at Emirates from Real Madrid in 2013.
Not only Marca, German newspaper Bild has also published an interesting story. They claimed, one of Ozil’s agents have informed them about the current situation and it’s certainly a concern for Wenger, “It is well known and true that Arsenal want to extend with Mesut. It is also true that there are constantly other requests for him. Mesut is a world champion, the most creative player in Europe, Germany’s top player – so it is clear that top clubs show their interest in him.”
With a staggering £42.5 million, Mesut Özil was signed from Real Madrid to give much-anticipated titles to Arsenal, and the stylish German is finally ready to live up to the record-breaking transfer fee. Ozil is currently leading the Premier League in chances created and assists; he has been no doubt one of the best play-maker playing in England.
