Lucas Perez has completed his medical with Arsenal and his transfer should be announced later today, according to latest reports.
The Spaniard has been in London to undergo final examinations after the Gunners agreed a £17million deal with his club Deportivo La Coruna.
Perez, 27, has now passed his medical without any complications, with an announcement now all that’s missing as the deal looks done, according to the Daily Mirror.
Arsenal have been after a new striker for much of this summer, notably failing in their efforts to sign Jamie Vardy from Premier League title rivals Leicester City, whilst also seeing a bid rejected by Lyon for Alexandre Lacazette.
While Perez has perhaps not been a priority target for Arsene Wenger, he will now be tasked with competing with Olivier Giroud for a starting spot up front at the Emirates Stadium.
There is rightly some criticism of Perez’s overall scoring stats – they don’t exactly scream ‘elite striker’ in the Vardy or Lacazette mould.
While 17 goals in total last season for a club like Deportivo might be impressive, he’ll definitely be expected to up his game at a club like Arsenal, and improve on his conversion rate of 19% over the last three seasons (not including penalties), which puts him behind Giroud’s 22%.
However, capable of playing behind the main striker or out wide, Perez can also add plenty of creativity to Arsenal’s front line, with some impressive chance creation stats.
German defender Shkodran Mustafi is also expected to join imminently from La Liga outfit Valencia.
If Mustafi settles quickly in England to put in the kind of performances he has elsewhere, he could bring a superb centre-back combination alongside Koscielny.
