IPL 2017, Rising Pune Supergiants

Franchises normally depend upon ‘fan loyalty’ as a part of their brand building. Having a strong, die-hard fan base associated with a team is the first step towards building a great team legacy apart from other factors. Efforts get minimalised when the franchise has a player who is a brand in himself. A player of his kind, who can build the reputation of a team just by his mere presence, is generally looked upon as a humongous advantage.

So, therefore, when Mahendra Singh Dhoni – former Chennai Super Kings skipper – was roped in as the skipper of the newly formed Rising Pune Supergiants, the franchise automatically surrounded itself with the ‘loyalists’, who felt that they can make up for the loss of CSK by supporting RPSG. Unfortunately, a poor season marred by injuries and under-performing cricketers followed, triggering some stunning decisions from the franchise.

Ahead of the season, the franchise announced the removal of Dhoni as the skipper and elected Australia’s Steven Smith as his replacement. While Smith is no ordinary guy as a cricketer, but the emotional fans will be slightly upset to see their favourite cricketing hero just as a specialist wicketkeeper batsman.

The Rising Pune Supergiants are into their last season (as far as the current situation is concerned). But they are as optimistic about having a great season as the other teams are. It was Pune’s think tank that made the first big headline in the auction when they bought Ben Stokes for a record Rs 14.5 crores. The side later went on to add Dan Christian, Lockie Ferguson and Manoj Tiwary in the auction to add more muscle to their respective departments.

They also went on to acquire Shardul Thakur, the Mumbai right-arm fast bowler, to strengthen the pace bowling department. With Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin and Faf du Plessis already in the frame, the team looks all set to rock this season if luck favors them. They finished second from the bottom last season. Hopefully, they’ll do much better this time around.
