5. Salil Ankola
Salil Ankola is probably more popular for his blink-and-miss appearances in movies and on television than his cricketing career. Ankola made his debut in the same test match as Sachin Tendulkar in 1989, his first and last test. Ankola began his acting career with a TV serial ‘Chahat aur Nafrat’ and then acted in the 2003 flick ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne’. He has since acted in movies like Kurukshetra and Pitaah and made a brief appearance in the first season of Bigg Boss.
Sandeep Patil may have donned the selector’s hat now, but he was more than keen on making it big in Bollywood. Patil played the lead role in the 1985 romantic caper Kabhie Ajnabi The. He was paired opposite actress Poonam Dhillon, but the film failed to make an impact at the Box Office. Interestingly, wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani played the role of the villain in the very same movie.
Sunil Gavaskaar was the BAAP of all batsmen in his playing days, but his acting career isn’t one Sunny bhai would be hugely proud of. Gavaskar played the lead role in a Marathi film called ‘Savli Premachi’ which released in 1980 but made little business at the box office. He also starred in a special appearance in a Naseeruddin Shah starrer camedy ‘Malamaal’ in 1988.
Salim Durrani was probably the most handsome cricketer to try his luck in movies. He was the first ever cricketer to play a leading role in a Hindi film. Durrani’s 70mm debut came in B.R.Ishara’s movie ‘Charitra’ in 1973. His heroine? The beautiful Parveen Babi.
1. Ajay Jadeja
Ajay Jadeja was one of the main stays of the Indian Team in the 1990’s, but his circketing career was cut short by the infamous match fixing scandal which shook the foundations of Indian cricket at the turn of the century. Jadeja was subsequently banned by the BCCI for five years, and he too came knocking on Bollywood’s door. He stared in the movie ‘Khel’ in 2003 opposite the gorgeous Celina Jaitley along with Sunil Shetty and Sunny Deol. The song and dance sequences exposed his inablities and the emotional scenes highlighted his inexperience. Jadeja never acted again and can now be seen working as a cricket analyst on TV.
Flop actor Harman Baweja’s only ever achievement so far has been to gather all the great international cricketing stars of our generation to star in an special cameo appearance in his cricket-based movie ‘Victory’ which released in 2008.Indian players like Harbhajan Singh, Dinesh Karthik, R.P.Singh played the part of Harman`s teammates while Brett Lee, Graeme Smith, Chaminda Vaas and the likes of AB de Villiers were all too keen to chip in with a cameo.
