Southampton 3-2 Liverpool: Player ratings

Liverpool’s trip to Southampton was a story of two halves as the visitors who went into the break after the first half 2 goals to the good somehow managed to squander the lead and lose all three points come the end of the game.

Impact substitutions from Ronald Koeman helped the Saints move within 4 points to a Champions League spot while Klopp’s men are left moving into the international break on the back of yet another set-back.

Here are the player ratings for this game for both sides:

Southampton:

F Forster (3):

Could have done nothing to stop Liverpool’s goals and did exceptionally well to keep Allen’s shot away in the first half when they were 2-0 down.

J Fonte (2.5):

Far from a solid performance as he was often found out of his place and afforded plenty of space to the visitors front line.

E Bertrand (2.5):

Should have done better against Sturridge’s goal and was also disappointing with his set-piece delivery.

Van Djik (2.5):

Could have done a lot more in defense but was a solid presence in the final third from dead ball situations.

R Martina (2):

Had a horrible day as he was often not in sync with his team and made a number of rash clearances to put his team under pressure.

D Tadic (2):

Hardly put a cross into the box as he struggled on the flank and was withdrawn at the half for Sadio Mane.

J Clasie (2):

Could not get into grips with the Liverpool mid-field in the first half and was taken off subsequently at half time.

S Davis (3):

Started the game slowly but grew into it in the second half and played an important role in their come-back.

O Romeu (2.5):

Was stretched on the flanks all night by the Liverpool mid-field as he rarely had a chance to do anything in the final third.

G Pelle (3):

Was left as the lone striker in the first half and had no service to work with but showed his class with a top notch strike into the top corner for the equalizer.

S Long (2.5):

Should have been awarded a penalty for his troubles in a bright first half but drifted away as the game went on.

Subs:

V Wanyama (3.5):

Took charge of the mid-field for the home side as he provided the mettle they were missing in the first half.

S Mane (4):

A man of the match performance from the winger who came on as a substitute and used his pace and strength to get the better of the Liverpool defense on his way to scoring a brace that got his team all three points.

J Ware-Prowse (2.5)

Liverpool:

S Mignolet (2.5):

Was shaky in front of goal all night and his poor clearance late in the game helped Mane put the Saints in the lead for the first time after he saved a penalty from the same player.

J Flanagan (3.5):

Though lost possession at times, stuck to his task superbly as he stayed strong on the flank on his first night as a Liverpool captain.

D Lovren (2.5):

Almost gave away an early penalty and also got booked in an event full first half for the Croatian who was subbed off at half time.

M Sakho (3.5):

A beast at the back, Sakho looked back to his best and though lost his cool when Southampton were running riot, put in a solid performance.

N Clyne (3):

Stuck to his task well but was caught out of position at times against the likes of Mane and made it easier for the Saints.

E Can (3):

Another solid performance from the German who was superb in the first half but slowly faded away in the second.

J Allen (2.5):

Should have put Liverpool 3-0 up and also gave away the ball unnecessarily more than a couple of times in danger areas.

A Lallana (2.5):

Was smart when in possession but had to do a lot more against his former team as he hardly had a touch of the ball in the final third in the second half.

P Coutinho (3.5):

Another superb performance from the Brazilian who pulled one out his bag, 30 yards out to beat Forster for the first goal of the game. Had little impact however in the second half.

D Sturridge (3):

Showed his finishing abilities with a sublime strike to put Liverpool 2 up but failed to have any telling impact in the second half before being replaced.

D Origi (3):

Used his pace to run in behind defenders to free up space for his team mates in a confident performance from the Belgian.

Subs:

M Skrtel (2):

Came in for Lovren at the start of the second half and was responsible for two of the goals and also a penalty that was saved in a shaky performance coming back from a lengthy injury.

C Benteke (2.5)

S Ojo (2.5):

Came on for his first game in Liverpool colors in the domestic league but had little chance to do anything on the night.
