Manpreet Kaur the ace Shot-Putter from Patiala Punjab, representing Railways team, shattered national records standing since last 18 years to secure Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games berth on the first day of National Open Athletics Championships yesterday in Kolkata.
Manpreet started with 17.19m before knocking off the NR of Harbans Kaur stood in the record books since 1997 by half a meter on her second round throw of 17.96m. She had another noteworthy 17.30m in the next attempt. Manpreet finished a creditable 9th place in the World Youth Championships at Ostrava in 2008 and a similar position at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi two years later. She was out on a sabbatical for 3 years and was out of Competitive athletics following her marriage and childbirth. Her last international meet was the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
On the come back to the athletics, she threw 16.39 meters in the last national meet and bettered it to 17.15m toss while winning the inter-railway championships at Bhopal last month.
Long distance runner O P Jaisha of Railways again who has already qualified for Ro Olympics, also won women’s 5000 meters race without any trouble by clocking 15:31:73. In the process hse erased the late record set by Preeja Sridharan’s meet record of 15:45:96 set in October 2007.
Dutee Chand is also on the course as she raced 100 meters final with a timing of 11.68 seconds though it is short of the qualifying timing of 11.31 second.
