Coefficients explained: How can EPL save its 4th spot from NOT losing to Italy?

Aakarsh / 01 October 2015

The Barclays Premier League has often been known for its own style of play and has had some successful clubs over the years. They have always been a force to reckon with and have competed at the highest level with a certain level of arrogance. However, the EPL is now in grave danger of actually losing a spot in the Champions League. Read on to understand how they can hold on to their spot.

The Champions League and the Europa League has clubs from all around Europe competing for the final prize. The top three leagues have 4 teams playing the UCL. La Liga is way ahead of the rest and is not really thinking about all these calculations. Bundesliga and the EPL are the other leagues with 4 teams.

Serie A is just behind the Premier League and is pushing the English clubs for a fourth place. These places are decided by co-efficient points that are calculated in the following manner.

Every Club scores 2 points for a win in both the European competitions and this is divided by the number of teams from that league that are playing in the competition. So every victory for a German Club gives them 0.29 co-efficient points. English teams get 0.25 co-efficient points for a win and the Italian clubs get 0.33 points for a win.

In the present year, the German clubs have been impressive and have collected 4.714 co-efficient points. The Premier League teams have scored only 4.125 points and the Italian clubs 3.000. This leaves the total points at:

Germany – 68.463

England – 66.159

Italy – 61.939

These calculations are done on the basis of results of the last 5 years and the 2010-11 seasons’ points do not matter anymore.

England is in danger of losing the 4th Champions League spot if Italy who will gain 3.893 points at the end of the year can continue to win games. The English teams, on the other hand, have not been at their best for more than a year now and if the Italian Clubs can keep winning games, the English teams may well be in danger of losing the Champions League spot.

For the remainder of the season, Germany has 7 teams still in all European competitions. England has 6 after Southampton and West Ham United were Eliminated. Italy has 5 teams in such competitions as Sampdoria was eliminated earlier. This leaves the England clubs with a lot of work to do before the points are recalculated at the end of the year.

However, Serie A has a long way to go before overtaking the Premier League in the ratings and will need some results to be in their favor if they want to snatch a Champions League place from the Premier League teams.

It is not yet clear as to how these points may pan out at the end of the season. Any change at the end of this season would affect league positions in 2016-17, and Champions League competition in 2017-18. So in the current season and the next, the German clubs and the English clubs will hold their 4 places in the Europe’s elite competition with a healthy lead over the Serie A clubs.

The competition between the Leagues from different nations will only make the sport even exciting and FIFA will be more than happy to see that the Leagues are taking these calculations seriously.
